Milky's Music Matters... Scene Live

Focus on upcoming Bedford gigs in January and February 2020

Independent Venue Week (IVW) commences on 27 January 2020 and the promoters working at Esquires have once again delivered an impressive array of gigs to celebrate this period. In late October Esquires made it through to the final three for the ‘Best Live Venue Under 800 Capacity’ award won by the Brudenhall in Leeds – great recognition for all who work at the venue and the punters who pay regular visits to live events held there. For 2019 IVW, venue owner Gareth Barber along with promoters Milky (Roar Club) and Kevin Bailey (Pad Presents) were invited onto Steve Lamacq’s Six Music show to talk about live music in Bedford – further appreciation of the hard work to keep Bedford relevant on the UK live music scene.

We need your support, get those tickets bought in advance and we’ll keep booking the shows. 2019 saw the likes of Tim Burgess, Black Grape, Sleeper, Gaz Coombes, Bodega, Spear of Destiny, The Orielles, The Murder Capital, Pottery, The Slow Readers Club, Pigs x 7, Lucy Spraggan, Alfie Templeman, The Quireboys, Wheatus, Jesus Jones, Stereo MC’s, Vistas, FEET, Honeyblood, Art Brut, Big Country, Black Honey, Bad Manners, She Drew The Gun, Wayne Hussey, Trail of Dead, Goat Girl, Altered Images, Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever play at the venue. Save up that Christmas present money as there are a number of unmissable shows lined up…

TOY.jpgIVW SHOW - TOY + guests
Thursday 30 January, doors 8pm @ Esquires, Bedford
Tickets £12 in advance + booking fee

Since 2010, Toy have earned a reputation as a band of integrity, virtuosity and taste with Tom, Maxim, Dominic, Charlie and (joining in 2015) Max creating a sound that is embedded in the underground tradition, yet distinctly their own. Since their inception, they have released the acclaimed albums Toy (2012), Join The Dots (2013) and Clear Shot (2016), and toured everywhere from Serbia to China. Their fourth album, Happy In The Hollow, is entirely uncompromising: an atmospheric capturing of a state of mind that touches on Krautrock, electronic dissonance and psychedelic rock while building its own reality and inviting us in. When you look at Toy’s background, their journey down this road less travelled begins to make sense.

BC Camplight.jpgIVW SHOW – BC CAMPLIGHT + guests
Friday 31 January, doors 8pm @ Esquires, Bedford
Tickets £12.50 in advance + booking fee

BC Camplight is the moniker of maverick songsmith Brian Christinzio. The Philadelphian turned Mancunian is one of indie music’s most forward-thinking artists with a discography which acts as a soundtrack to a life rife with bad fortune, mental illness, running foul of the law, and ultimately absolute redemption. After a series of brilliant but largely overlooked albums and stints playing with The War on Drugs and Sharon Van Etten, 2018 saw the release of Deportation Blues. An amazing piece of work (featuring the breakout hit I'm Desperate), it was voted best LP the year by BBC 6Music, and finally brought BC Camplight the success he deserved.

'I think he’s the best live act in the world to be honest, and Deportation Blues is just a classic, classic album from start to finish. I urge everybody to go out and buy it.' (Marc Riley)

With many dates of his current UK tour having sold out in advance and a new album due in the spring of 2020 on Bella Union records, we are extremely privileged and excited that BC has agreed to play Bedford as part of Independent Venue Week. Booking early is advisable.

Warmduscher.jpgIVW SHOW – WARMDUSCHER
Sunday 2 February @ Esquires, Bedford
Doors 8pm - Tickets £12 in advance + booking fee

Warmduscher are Clams Baker (Mutado Pintado/Paranoid London) Lightnin’ Jack Everett (Fat White Family), Quicksand (Fat White Family), Mr. Salt Fingers Lovecraft (Childhood, Insecure Men) and The Witherer aka Little Whiskers (Paranoid London). Warmduscher is a group of miscreants, known only by aliases. Ardent fans, Iggy Pop and Marc Riley have only gleaming praise to heap on the band, and in return, Warmduscher has blessed them both with immortality.

The band’s live show has left thousands across the UK and Europe desperate for more. During their set at End of the Road Festival 2018, they were accused of inciting a riot and thrown into a giant hole.

Luckily for us, the tour includes a show at our very own Esquires as part of IVW 2020. These guys have been everywhere recently and we highly advise grabbing a ticket in advance.
